About Amy Helminiak

Nova Shelley is a contemporary artist based in Baltimore that focuses on the female condition. Her works encompass oil paintings with unapologetic imagery of severed heads placed in still lifes/landscapes, playful collages that utilize repetition as well as large scale figurative charcoal drawings that have been described as having a Simpsons cartoon-like feel but more refined. Her works depict personal narratives, intimacy of female friendships, childlike play and an overall vibe of the environment in which she lives.

She studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and graduated with a BFA. She also earned an MA in photography and design from Elisava School of Design, Barcelona.

Her work has been exhibited at the TIM Center, Venice, Italy; Cam Framis, Funacio Vila Casas, Barcelona, Spain; Cosmo Gallery, Arles, France; Grand Rapids Museum Of Art, Grand Rapids, USA. She has also received recognition from The Print Center and The Art Laguna Prize. Her work was featured in the Bmore Art Journal, Archival Issue, Nov 2019.
